An open door is available along the banks of the west Amazon river basin! Those of us who have been privileged to visit and share have noticed an openness that is undoubtedly the result of God's Spirit moving in a powerful way. Our desire is to see the people of the river (Ribeirinhos in their Portuguese language) respond to God's invitation and become fully devoted disciples of Jesus Christ. Through short-term volunteer mission teams, Amazon Vision seeks to minister to those people.
The scope of these ministries include medical and dental care, distribution of certain medicines, clothing distribution, evangelism, discipleship, leadership development training, church planting, children's Bible education, and construction teams. We partner in this ministry with American and Brazilian organizations including the Florida Baptist Convention, the International Mission Board, the Amazonas Baptist Convention, the Brazilian Baptist Convention and its Home Mission Board as well as Asas de Socorro, the Brazilian arm of Mission Aviation Fellowship.
The scope of the work is daunting by human standards! AVM organizes workers, mostly short-term volunteers, to reach out to the people located in the estimated 33,000 villages which make up the west Amazon basin. These committed volunteers provide medical and dental care along with the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Since AVM's inception, there have been over 23,000 recorded decisions for Christ, 15 new churches started, and five new church buildings constructed. AVM is always engaged in discovering new opportunities in this vital work of winning people to Jesus, disciplining them to follow Christ and helping them form New Testament churches where they can fellowship and join in fulfilling the Great Commission themselves.
The ministries have been conducted from a floating base of operations, the river boat. In order to be more efficient and effective, AVM is re-evaluating the needs necessary to get the job done. We envision that smaller, faster boats may aid in helping to move discipleship forward . Great opportunities exist for ministering to the physical needs of the Ribereirinhos. Nearly 100 American and Brazilian volunteer doctors and nurses have already attended to the medical and dental needs of over 6,000 people. Needs also exist for funds to cover general operating expenses, for endowment that can help get volunteers to the river for less, and for the capital items that allow for this expanded vision such as fast-boats and more sophisticated communications.
